Hawaiʻi CARES Crisis Line Statistics
Hawaiʻi CARES Crisis Center Phone Line Volume
Hawaiʻi CARES serves as the statewide behavioral health crisis center, offering support for individuals experiencing mental health or substance use crises. The Crisis Counselors at the center respond to calls, texts, and chats received from 988, previously the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (NSPL). Hawaiʻi CARES also answers calls from the local crisis lines 808-832-3100 and 800-753-6879, as well as ones transferred from 911.
Following the devastating August 2023 wildfires on Maui, the Maui Wildfire Warmline was established to address specific needs of those affected.
Crisis Counselors are equipped to make outbound calls when coordination is required with collateral contacts or to dispatch a Crisis Mobile Outreach (CMO) unit to assist a resident in crisis. Their mission is to ensure timely, compassionate, and effective support for anyone in need across the state.
All contacts are shown in Hawaiʻi Standard Time (HST).
Text and chat 24/7 coverage effective June 1, 2023 with data updated monthly. Data or counts are duplicated for individuals that call multiple times and therefore some categories might be over represented.
The graph above and the Inbound Details graph below will not necessarily match, because this graph counts every distinct contact (i.e., call, text or chat), whereas the graph below counts every event, which might include multiple contacts. For example, multiple calls from/to the person in crisis, a family member, the school, or the CMO could be linked to a single event in the graph below.
Hawaiʻi CARES Crisis Center Inbound Details
Text and chat 24/7 coverage effective June 1, 2023 and are measured separately in the data starting December 2023. Data or counts are duplicated for individuals that call multiple times and therefore some categories might be over represented.
Data for 2022 only starts as of July 1, 2022, therefore the year view should not be used to compare the inbound volume by year.
Categories are mutually exclusive, even if you choose multiple selections. For example, if you choose “Youth Related Issues” and “Substance Abuse”, those numbers are added to show the sum of those two selections together. Selections do not overlap or intersect because each call to Hawaii CARES is only labeled with one presenting problem. Definitions of Levels and Presenting Problems can be found in this document.
